What to do in Spain in winter

It is generally accepted that you can vacation in Spain only from May to October. However, during the cold season, life in the country does not stop. Despite the fact that many entertainments are unavailable, tourists always have something to do in Spain in winter. Especially in large cities.

Since the end of November, the country has been in a Christmas atmosphere. The streets are decorated for the holiday. Fairs are held in the squares. Boutiques have sales with a huge selection and reasonable prices. Skating rinks are opening. In each of the cities you can find entertainment to your liking.

Barcelona

Barcelona is mostly sunny in winter. The weather is conducive to long walks. So, you can visit the famous Sagrada Familia Cathedral. During the cold season there are few tourists there, so there is an opportunity to carefully examine the temple.

Park Güell is no less beautiful in winter than at any other time of the year. The absence of tourists makes it possible to walk and take bright photographs with the famous lizard or other characters from Gaudí’s creation.

Park Ciutadella is open all year round. You can walk there and enjoy tangerine trees and a huge number of parrots.

In winter, the zoo and aquarium continue to operate in Barcelona. They will be interesting to both children and adults. The oceanarium is divided into several zones. In addition to numerous fish, you can meet penguins who walk right around the territory.

The city has numerous museums and exhibitions. On holidays, admission is at a reduced price or completely free.

Not far from Barcelona there is Mount Montserrat. At its top there is a monastery. Pilgrims often come there. Standing on the observation deck, you can see clouds and mountains from below. You can get to Montserrat by train and then by cable car. The main thing – follow the schedule and not be late for the last train.

During the Christmas holidays, the amusement park is open – Port Aventura. Trains go to Salou from Barcelona.

In winter, Barcelona offers rich fish soups and desserts – churros, turron. In the warm season, finding them in cafes and restaurants is quite difficult. Many tourist locations have catering outlets.

Madrid

Madrid – capital of Spain. On the eve of Christmas, the city is decorated with festive illuminations. During this period you can visit the Prado Museum. There are paintings by famous authors, sculptures and jewelry on display. The museum is world famous.

Cybele Square is called the pearl of the Spanish capital. It is surrounded by beautiful buildings and the Cibeles Palace. Monarchs once lived there. Works of art are displayed inside. The observation deck offers a magnificent view.  In the central part there is a fountain with a sculpture of the goddess Cybele.

Madrid has enough attractions that are worthy of attention. For example, the bullfighting museum. In it you can learn about how bullfights between bullfighters and bulls took place.

Families with children can visit the Faunia Natural Park, where cute animals, beautiful birds, and dangerous reptiles await them. The park is home to about 3.5 thousand living creatures. On the territory there is an aquarium with the largest fish in the world.

At Warner Park Madrid, children can feel like real stuntmen, fly into space and see their favorite fairy-tale characters.

You can also go to the Casa de Campo park, where there are a large number of rides and other entertainment for children and adults.

Madrid regularly hosts various festivals with magnificent fireworks displays. Incendiary music is playing on the streets and castanets are heard.

On January 1, the ringing of bells announces the arrival of the New Year. On this day there are costumed processions on the streets. There are fairs. Concerts are held.

Seville

In Seville in winter you can walk around Plaza de España, which looks very unusual. There is a fountain in the center. On one side the square is framed by a semicircular building, designed in two styles.

To relax, you can visit the Marie-Louise Park, which is rich in greenery. It has playgrounds, a fish pond, and orange trees.

Families with children can visit the House of Science. There is a huge figure of a whale hanging from the very ceiling of the building, as well as various museum exhibits and other interesting objects. Most of them can be touched. The House of Science has a planetarium where programs about space are held.

Another original attraction of Seville – Metropol Parasol. It consists of several structures made in the form of large umbrellas. They are connected to each other. The design looks very unusual.

In winter you can go kayaking on the river in Seville.

Valencia

In Valencia you can find something to do and see at any time of the year. It is in this city that the famous Gulliver Park is located. The central object is a large statue, the length of which is – about 70 meters. It is placed horizontally. There are slides built right inside the statue. Children love the park. But adults will also be interested in seeing the giant.

Those who are interested in sports or are football fans can visit the Mestalla Stadium. Full-fledged excursions are held for tourists throughout its territory. Guests are invited to enter the field through the tunnel, look into the locker rooms and VIP box, and listen to the history of the club.

Valencia also has an Oceanographic Park, which welcomes visitors all year round. About 45 thousand different living creatures live in it. The oceanarium is divided into separate zones, access to which is through glass tunnels. Various fish, sharks and other inhabitants swim above the guests' heads.

One of the most modern attractions – City of Arts and Science. This is an entertainment center located on the site of the Turia River, which was drained. As a result, an interesting landscape was formed.

Like other cities, Valencia has a beautiful central square, ancient buildings, and museums. They all work in winter.

During the Christmas holidays, various processions, fairs and other events take place in the city.

Granada

At the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains is the city of Granada. This is a real paradise for those who love sightseeing. One of them – Alhambra complex. It consists of a fortress, palaces, and a garden with a lot of vegetation. Guests can spend hours walking around the grounds.

Granada has several temples that are worthy of attention. The main one is – Granada Cathedral. The walls and ceiling of the majestic building are painted by famous artists. Stained glass windows fill the room with light. The building is lavishly decorated with gold. There are 2 organs inside. Locals and tourists come to listen to their sound.

 There is a monastery on the mountain – Abbey of Sacromonte. There is a museum on site with paintings, sculptures and the oldest map of Granada. Under the church there are old catacombs.

In addition to numerous temples and monasteries, the city has other interesting places. For example, Arab baths. The building was built back in the 11th century. However, it is perfectly preserved. No structural changes were made to it. Once upon a time there was a hammam in the baths. Now they are accepting tourists. There are interactive panels on the walls that tell the history of this place and interesting facts.

In Granada there is a Science Park that will be of interest to children and adults. On its territory live animals, birds, fish and other representatives of the aquatic world, which you can observe. Show programs are also held. The park has a planetarium that has interactive exhibits. In the exhibition, ancient machines and mechanisms coexist with modern robots. The park hosts exhibitions and various master classes.

In the mountains, tourists will find equipped trails and beautiful descents. In winter there is always snow there.

Malaga

In Malaga, tourists should visit the La Malagueta arena. It was opened back in 1876. And it can accommodate more than ten thousand spectators at the same time. Bullfights are held in the arena. There is a bullfighting museum in the adjacent area. In it you can look at the traditional costumes of bullfighters, their equipment and bulls' heads.

Malaga is quite warm in winter. There are a large number of fortresses, castles and museums in the city and its surroundings. This is where the Picasso Museum is located. The collection consists of several thousand of his works.

Malaga has an automobile museum that houses rare vehicle models. Some of them were released back in the 18th century. The museum is located on the territory of a former tobacco factory.

Canary Islands
